Native to the low mountainous regions of Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan and the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, this small and delicate perennial flower used to be widely distributed but is now on the verge of extinction due to over-collection and habitat destruction.

The Feather Butterfly Orchid is a true gem in the botanical world. It typically grows to a height of 5 to 20 centimeters, with a flower diameter of about 1 centimeter. The flowers, which bloom around June (with some variation depending on the region), display a charming color palette of red-purple, or white with purple-red spots, creating a visually stunning spectacle. Without any noticeable scent, these flowers quietly showcase their beauty in the wild. The plant has adapted to grow in humid rock crevices, soil among rocks, moss, or grass roots, often found alongside plants like Selaginella in the misty cliffs.
